IPCC Report Puts Food at the Heart of Climate Battle

The latest IPCC report concludes: we are nowhere near on track to meet the Paris ambitions. At this point, it comes with no surprise that the food and agriculture sector has a vital role to play in tackling climate change. The sector is both exposed to and contributes to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. A transition towards sustainable diets and diversifying food production systems are key measures for countering climate change.
Europe Pollution Limits Include Livestock Farms for the First Time

Europe finally steps up on regulating emissions from cattle farming. For the first time, 20000 livestock farms are included in an upgrade of EU rules covering pollution. With animal agriculture accounting for 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the move has been a long time coming. The proposal to enforce stricter measures would cover 43% of EU livestock emissions, with more poultry and pig farms included.
Poorer Countries to be Affected the Most by a Global Food Crisis

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to severely disrupt global food supply chains. Unfortunately, poorer countries, such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, and Morocco, are projected to be affected by the consequences the most. These countries are also facing other crises: debt distress, high oil prices, and social issues. As climate change exacerbates these risks, it is down to wealthier nations and institutions to avert a hunger catastrophe.
